LUSAKA, Zambia — Two weeks after Zambia’s deeply contested presidential election, the southern African nation’s top opposition figure has been taken into police custody on treason allegations, marking a sharp escalation of political tensions following the disputed vote. Brian Mundubile, who ran against incumbent President Hakainde Hichilema in the August 13 ballot, turned himself in to law enforcement officials Thursday alongside his running mate Makebi Zulu, after spending weeks in hiding that included taking refuge in a local United Nations facility for safety.
