In one of the most eye-catching moves of this summer’s Premier League transfer window, Brentford has confirmed the signing of Senegalese defender El Hadji Malick Diouf from recently relegated West Ham United in a deal that could reach a total of £40 million.
The 21-year-old full-back, who joined West Ham just 12 months ago from Czech side Slavia Prague for a £19 million fee, has put pen to paper on a five-year contract with the west London club. The agreement also includes an option to extend his stay by an additional 12 months. The transfer structure sees Brentford pay an initial £35 million up front, with a further £5 million tied to performance-based add-on clauses.
Diouf featured for West Ham in their opening Championship fixture of the 2026-27 season against Burnley, but was pulled from the matchday squad for the Hammers’ next two outings as negotiations between the two clubs moved toward a final agreement. The young left-back was the top defensive target for Brentford throughout this transfer window, and while talks hit an impasse earlier in the summer, discussions were revived earlier this week to get the deal over the line.
For West Ham, the sale marks a significant capital gain on their initial investment, delivering a return of more than double what they paid for Diouf just one year ago. In his single season at the London Stadium, Diouf made 34 first-team appearances, registering five assists from his full-back position, despite the club ultimately finishing 18th and dropping out of the top flight.
Brentford interim head coach Keith Andrews welcomed the signing, highlighting that Diouf fits the club’s strategic transfer profile of signing young, developing talent with room to grow. “He’s a player that fits our ideal age profile, with lots of room to still develop,” Andrews said.
For his part, Diouf credited Andrews with convincing him that Brentford would be the right place to continue his progression as a professional. When questioned about his ambitions with his new side, the Senegalese international set an ambitious target, declaring: “Why not win the league?”
Diouf is Brentford’s fifth incoming transfer of the summer window, following the arrivals of striker Callum Wilson, midfielder Mamadou Sangare, centre-back Jannik Schuster and winger Jaidon Anthony. A breakout performer for Senegal over the past 12 months, Diouf earned a call-up to the national side for this summer’s World Cup, where he featured in four of the nation’s matches during the tournament.
The 2025-26 Premier League season was a historic one for Brentford, who finished in ninth place under Andrews – just one point and a margin of goal difference away from securing a spot in European competition. The Bees kicked off their new top-flight campaign on Saturday with an impressive 3-0 opening-day victory over Tottenham Hotspur, and will face Leeds United in their next league fixture this coming Sunday.
