Truce begins in wartorn Ukraine city after it was announced by Melania Trump

A long-awaited humanitarian truce has officially come into force in the Russian-occupied southern Ukrainian city of Oleshky, one week after the landmark agreement was brokered by U.S. First Lady Melania Trump to ease the dire civilian crisis gripping the frontline community.

Designed explicitly to unblock life-saving humanitarian aid shipments and enable the safe evacuation of trapped residents, the ceasefire was implemented in coordinated steps across the Dnipro River front line that divides the Kherson region. Russia’s Ministry of Defence announced via its official Telegram channel that it had halted all offensive fire directed at the Ukrainian-held city of Kherson, situated on the opposite bank of the Dnipro from Oleshky, at 04:00 Moscow Time (01:00 GMT) to clear the way for the planned civilian relief operation.

Oleshky, which sits on the Dnipro’s southern shore, has been cut off from critical supply routes for months, leaving its remaining population facing acute shortages of food, clean water, medicine and other basic essentials. Ukrainian parliamentary human rights commissioner Dmytro Lubinets, who also leads Ukraine’s negotiation team for the humanitarian initiative, formally verified the truce’s activation in a public Facebook post, confirming that Ukrainian forces are fully upholding their end of the ceasefire commitments.

The city was captured by Russian troops in the opening days of the full-scale invasion launched in February 2022, and its remaining residents have been trapped in a perilous no-man’s-land for months, caught between Ukrainian military positions across the Dnipro and Russian deployment lines to the east. Before the war, Oleshky supported a population of 24,000; current Ukrainian government assessments indicate roughly 6,000 civilians remain in the city and its adjacent settlements, including 200 vulnerable children.

The White House confirmed last week that Melania Trump’s behind-the-scenes diplomatic outreach had secured the cross-party ceasefire deal. In an official press statement, the First Lady outlined that non-military civilian representatives from both Russia and Ukraine will collaborate to conduct door-to-door visits across Oleshky to assess individual household needs and distribute targeted relief support. Though Melania Trump has maintained a far lower public profile than many of her recent predecessors, making only rare appearances at official White House functions, she has increasingly centered her public advocacy on addressing civilian suffering caused by the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The high-profile diplomatic effort follows an open letter she addressed directly to Russian President Vladimir Putin in August 2025, in which she urged that immediate action be taken to protect children and safeguard the future of generations affected by global armed conflict.
