This narrow waterway, which borders Oman along its southern coast, carried roughly 20 percent of the world’s total oil and natural gas shipments before the latest escalation of conflict across the Middle East, making its security a critical priority for global energy markets.
This is not the first meeting between King Charles and Sultan Haitham: the British monarch hosted the Oxford-educated Omani leader for a private tea at Windsor Castle during an unofficial visit to the UK last year. The last full state visit by an Omani sultan to the United Kingdom dates back to March 1982, when the late Queen Elizabeth II welcomed Sultan Haitham’s predecessor, Sultan Qaboos bin Said.
