Nadal set to join Real Madrid board of directors

One of the most decorated athletes in global sports history, 40-year-old retired tennis superstar Rafael Nadal, is poised to take a seat on the board of Spanish football powerhouse Real Madrid, pending formal sign-off from the club’s registered members at a scheduled general assembly later this month.
A lifelong Real Madrid supporter who has held official club membership under ID number 67,778 for decades, Nadal retired from professional competitive tennis earlier in 2024 after cementing a legendary career resume that includes 22 Grand Slam singles titles, two Olympic gold medals, and five Davis Cup championships leading the Spanish national tennis squad. His longstanding affection for the club is well-documented, with numerous public appearances at Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu stadium for top-tier matches over the years.
In an official public statement confirming the proposed appointment, Real Madrid’s leadership hailed Nadal as not only one of the most iconic sporting figures of all time, but also one of the most universally respected Spanish athletes on the global stage. “It is an immense point of pride to welcome a figure of his unparalleled sporting caliber and personal integrity, a global benchmark for athletic excellence, to our board of directors, where he will bring his unique perspective to shape the club’s ongoing operations and long-term strategic roadmap,” the club statement added.
Sharing the news via his official X social media account, Nadal accompanied his announcement with a nostalgic childhood photograph of himself wearing a Real Madrid youth kit, expressing profound excitement for the new role. “I want to extend my deepest gratitude to president Florentino Pérez and the entire existing board for putting forward this proposal for me to join the governing body of the club I have loved since I was a small boy,” Nadal wrote. “I have accepted this opportunity with enormous enthusiasm, a humble eagerness to learn from every member of the team, and full commitment to contribute every bit of my experience and energy to support this club’s success.”
Specific portfolio responsibilities that Nadal will oversee on the board have not yet been publicly disclosed. The proposed appointment comes in the aftermath of Pérez’s landslide re-election to a new four-year presidential term back in June, marking his continuous tenure leading the club since 2009. Shortly after securing re-election, Pérez orchestrated a high-profile move to bring iconic manager José Mourinho back for a second spell as Real Madrid’s head coach, as the club seeks to reverse a two-season trophy drought across all major competitions including La Liga, the UEFA Champions League, and the Copa del Rey. As of the latest 2024-25 La Liga standings, Real Madrid sits in third place after 11 matchdays, trailing three points behind current defending league champions Barcelona.
