A French tourist family has emerged from a terrifying 16-hour ordeal stranded in the Gulf of Thailand, after an unexpected jet ski accident left them drifting overnight in open waters before search teams finally pulled them to safety. The incident, which unfolded on Thailand’s world-famous resort island of Koh Samui, began Thursday afternoon when the 50-year-old head of the family rented a jet ski for a planned 45-minute recreational ride, according to local Thai media outlet the Bangkok Post. The rental was scheduled to conclude by roughly 17:40 local time, but when the father and his two young sons failed to return the watercraft by the agreed-upon time, rental operators raised an alarm with local emergency authorities, triggering an immediate search operation.
Local government official Amorn Chomchoey confirmed to Agence France-Presse that rough sea conditions disrupted the family’s trip unexpectedly. Toward the end of their rental period, large waves crashed into the jet ski, disabling its engine and leaving the craft dead in the water. The vehicle eventually capsized, leaving the three family members stranded in open sea between Koh Samui and the neighboring resort island of Koh Phangan. Search teams deployed speedboats and additional jet skis to comb the surrounding waters, but fading daylight and unsafe overnight sea conditions forced rescuers to pause their operation until dawn Friday.
The missing family was finally located just before 10:00 local time Friday, more than 16 hours after they first set out on their ride. Chomchoey reported that when the rescue team reached the group, all three were severely exhausted, pale, and had ingested large amounts of seawater after hours struggling against choppy swells. Dramatic footage captured during the final moments of the rescue shows one of the young boys perched on the exposed bow of the half-submerged capsized jet ski, while his father floats nearby in a life jacket waving to approaching rescuers. Both the father and both sons were wearing properly fitted life jackets throughout their ordeal, a factor that officials credit with helping them survive the overnight drift.
All three members of the stranded group were immediately transported to a local hospital for routine medical evaluations and observation. According to Chomchoey, none of the family members suffered serious injury, and all were released from care just a short time after arriving at the facility. While the three were being rescued and treated, the boys’ mother and older older sister remained on shore at Koh Samui, waiting anxiously for updates on their relatives, English-language Thai news outlet Nation Thailand reported. Once the family was reunited and cleared by medical staff, they chose to remain in Thailand and continue their scheduled holiday, officials confirmed to AFP.
