A high-profile incident of violence against an elected Irish politician has shaken the country’s political community, after independent Teachta Dála (TD) Michael Healy-Rae was punched in an unprovoked assault while stuck in urban traffic Wednesday afternoon.
The attack unfolded shortly after 16:00 local time on Cork Street, a busy thoroughfare in central Dublin. Healy-Rae had just wrapped up a day of parliamentary work at Leinster House, the seat of Ireland’s national legislature, and was traveling home when he stopped his vehicle at a red traffic light. With his car window lowered, an unidentified passerby approached the vehicle and delivered a single punch directly to the politician’s face before the incident was interrupted by bystanders.
First responders and law enforcement moved quickly to secure the scene and provide care to the injured TD. Healy-Rae received initial emergency medical treatment at Garda Headquarters’ Kevin Street Station before being transferred to St Vincent’s University Hospital for further evaluation and recovery.
