Australian law enforcement authorities have concluded one of the nation’s most extensive manhunts after fatally shooting fugitive Desmond Freeman, who had evaded capture for seven months while wanted for the murder of two police officers. The dramatic conclusion unfolded Monday when tactical units located the 56-year-old conspiracy theorist inside a caravan situated on an isolated rural property in Victoria state.
Police Commissioner Mike Bush detailed the final confrontation, indicating Freeman refused multiple demands to surrender peacefully before officers opened fire. “Everything I know at this point tells me that this shooting was justified,” Bush stated during a press conference. “There was a standoff. There was an opportunity for him to surrender peacefully, which he did not.”
The massive search operation, which at its peak deployed approximately 450 officers along with helicopter support, canine units, and reinforcements from New Zealand, focused on Victoria’s rugged bushland terrain where Freeman possessed notable survival skills. Authorities had classified Freeman as armed and extremely dangerous throughout the manhunt.
Freeman’s violent confrontation with law enforcement began in August when he opened fire on officers executing a search warrant at his Porepunkah residence, fatally wounding Detective Neal Thompson, 59, and Senior Constable Vadim De Waart, 35. A third officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the assault.
Court documents revealed Freeman’s affiliation with the anti-government ‘sovereign citizen’ movement and his history of referring to police as “frigging Nazis” and “terrorist thugs” during prior legal proceedings. Investigators believe Freeman potentially received assistance from local sympathizers sharing his anti-authority worldview during his months in hiding.
The Police Association of Victoria released a statement emphasizing remembrance of the fallen officers’ courage rather than focusing on Freeman’s demise. The state coroner will formally confirm identification and determine the exact circumstances of death as the investigation continues.
