Australian law enforcement authorities have concluded one of the nation’s most extensive manhunts after fatally shooting fugitive Desmond Freeman, who had evaded capture for seven months while wanted for the murder of two police officers. The dramatic conclusion unfolded Monday when tactical units located the 56-year-old conspiracy theorist inside a caravan situated on an isolated rural property in Victoria state.
Police Commissioner Mike Bush detailed the final confrontation, indicating Freeman refused multiple demands to surrender peacefully before officers opened fire. “Everything I know at this point tells me that this shooting was justified,” Bush stated during a press conference. “There was a standoff. There was an opportunity for him to surrender peacefully, which he did not.”
The massive search operation, which at its peak deployed approximately 450 officers along with helicopter support, canine units, and reinforcements from New Zealand, focused on Victoria’s rugged bushland terrain where Freeman possessed notable survival skills.
