Brewers win first World Series in 57-year history

Against all odds for a small-market Major League Baseball franchise operating with a mid-tier payroll, the Milwaukee Brewers etched their name in league history on Wednesday, securing the first World Series championship in the club’s 57-year existence. The decisive 4-1 Game 5 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays, played at Tropicana Field in Florida, sealed a 4-1 series triumph in the 122nd edition of MLB’s iconic Fall Classic.
Long defined by decades of near-misses and a single prior World Series appearance all the way back in 1982, the Brewers defied conventional sports industry expectations this season: competing in MLB’s smallest media market, the team ranked just 19th out of 30 franchises in total player payroll, yet posted the league’s best regular-season record for the second consecutive year. Their postseason run was nothing short of dominant: after avenging a crushing 2023 National League Championship Series defeat to the two-time defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers by sweeping the Dodgers out of the 2024 NLCS, Milwaukee notched 11 wins from 13 total playoff games to punch their ticket to the World Series.
The championship-clinching Game 5 unfolded with methodical precision for the Brewers. Milwaukee drew first blood in the top of the second inning, when a single from 20-year-old rookie Cooper Pratt drove Brice Turang across home plate. They extended their lead to 2-0 in the fifth frame, thanks to an RBI hit from David Hamilton, before blowing the game open with two more runs in the sixth: a booming double from eventual series MVP William Contreras, followed by Pratt’s sacrifice fly that pushed the score to 4-0. Starting pitcher Jacob Misiorowski exited the contest in the sixth inning after a stellar outing, and the Rays — the top seed from the American League — did not break onto the scoreboard until the top of the ninth, when a double from Chandler Simpson brought Liam Hicks home for their lone run of the night.
The series path to the championship saw the Brewers take the first two games on their home turf in Wisconsin, before notching a third straight win in Florida. The Rays managed a narrow win in Game 4 to force the deciding fifth contest, but could not overcome Milwaukee’s lockdown pitching and timely hitting in the finale.
28-year-old Venezuelan backstop William Contreras was named World Series Most Valuable Player, cementing his place in league lore as just the eighth catcher ever to claim the prestigious award, and the third Venezuelan player to earn the honor. Contreras, alongside Brewers teammates Jackson Chourio and Antonio Senzatela, had also helped lead Venezuela to victory at the 2023 World Baseball Classic earlier this year.
The Brewers franchise traces its origins to 1969, when it debuted in MLB as the short-lived Seattle Pilots, relocating to Milwaukee after just one troubled season in the Pacific Northwest. Half a century of ups and downs followed, culminating in the 2024 squad’s legendary run that turned long-suffering Milwaukee fanbase’s decades of unmet hopes into a celebrated championship.
