Top House Democrat ‘a hard yes’ on impeaching Hegseth

Fresh off a decisive midterm election victory that will hand Democrats full control of the U.S. House of Representatives when the new congressional session gavel in this coming January, New York Congressman and incoming House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries has publicly committed his full support to a bipartisan push to impeach sitting U.S. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth. During a Sunday appearance on ABC’s flagship political talk show *This Week*, Jeffries – the overwhelming favourite to be elected the next House Speaker, the top leadership post in the U.S. lower congressional chamber – stated unequivocally, “I’m a hard yes on the Hegseth resolution. Pete Hegseth has got to go.” Jeffries laid out a series of sharp allegations against the defence secretary, claiming Hegseth abused his executive authority, eroded core U.S. national security interests, and orchestrated an unprovoked, financially and humanly costly elective war against Iran. The impeachment push was first unveiled by outgoing Republican Congressman Thomas Massie, a longstanding vocal critic of President Donald Trump, who confirmed he intends to formally table the impeachment resolution as early as the first day of the returning congressional session this Monday. Massie’s filing includes eight distinct articles of impeachment against Hegseth, most notably a formal accusation that the defence secretary violated the 1973 War Powers Resolution by bypassing mandatory congressional oversight requirements to authorize U.S. military involvement in the Iran conflict. The BBC has reached out to the Pentagon for an official response to the pending impeachment resolution, but no public comment has been released as of press time. Jeffries, who has repeatedly pledged that the new Democratic House majority will act as a rigorous oversight check and balance on the Trump administration for the duration of the upcoming congressional term, also clarified during his weekend interview that House Democrats have no immediate plans to pursue impeachment proceedings against President Trump himself in the wake of their midterm electoral landslide.
