KYIV, Ukraine — A devastating Russian airstrike targeting the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv in the overnight hours of Tuesday has left two civilians dead and no fewer than 10 others wounded, regional administrative officials confirmed Wednesday. The violent assault broke a brief lull in attacks on the capital that held over the preceding weekend, timed with the arrival of two American envoys, Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, who touched down in Kyiv for their inaugural official visit as part of a renewed diplomatic effort to negotiate an end to the 2-year full-scale Russo-Ukrainian conflict.
Ukraine’s State Emergency Service reported that extensive structural damage and raging fires have been documented in at least five of Kyiv’s administrative districts. An update posted to the Telegram messaging platform by the Kyiv City Military Administration added that damage to non-military civilian infrastructure has been confirmed across 16 separate sites across the city.
In Holosiivskyi District, a 26-story non-residential high-rise took a direct hit from incoming ordnance. A separate impact in the same district sparked an uncontrolled blaze that spread to an adjacent non-residential structure. First responders were able to pull one survivor from the rubble and evacuated two additional residents from an apartment unit in a nearby 16-story residential building.
In Kyiv’s Solomianskyi District, multiple residents were trapped after a strike hit a 5-story residential apartment block. Emergency crews successfully evacuated at least 10 trapped people from the damaged building, the State Emergency Service said. Separate fires were also reported and contained in the city’s Darnytskyi and Podilskyi districts, according to official updates.
