Superb South Africa seal series win over Australia

South Africa secured an unassailable 2-0 lead in their three-match one-day international series against Australia on Saturday, sealing a hard-fought 32-run victory in Johannesburg after twin centuries from skipper Temba Bavuma and star middle-order batter David Miller set up a dominant total at the Wanderers Stadium.

The match got off to a dream start for Australia, when paceman Aiden Markram fell to the very first delivery of the innings, and fellow opener Quinton de Kock followed quickly back to the pavilion after scoring just 15 runs. Left with an early wobble at 38 for three wickets, Bavuma and Miller steered the hosts out of trouble with a match-defining 156-run fourth-wicket partnership that turned the tide of the contest firmly in South Africa’s favor.

Bavuma adopted a controlled, steady approach to reach his century off 112 balls, finishing with 103 runs from 116 deliveries before being caught out off the bowling of Jack Edwards. Miller, meanwhile, launched a devastating assault on the Australian bowling attack, bringing up his hundred off just 73 balls. He continued his aggressive form through the closing overs, combining with brothers Marco and Duan Jansen to push South Africa’s final total to an imposing 365 for nine off the allotted 50 overs. Miller’s incredible knock of 142 from 93 balls included 12 boundaries and nine maximums, and he benefited greatly from a disruption to Australia’s bowling group: seamer Nathan Ellis was restricted to just four overs after suffering a side strain early in the innings. Even with that setback, Edwards turned in a remarkable performance in just his second ODI, finishing with five wickets for 67 runs to limit the hosts’ final advantage.

Chasing the largest target in ODI history to win, Australia got off to a flying start, with opening batters Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh putting on 130 runs to put the Proteas bowling attack under pressure. Marsh top-scored for Australia with 83 runs from 53 balls, but neither Head nor Marsh could convert their starts into a match-winning century, mirroring the big partnerships that turned the game for South Africa. After both openers were dismissed, the Proteas picked up regular wickets through the middle overs to steadily chip away at Australia’s chase.

All-rounder Xavier Bartlett kept Australian hopes alive with a blistering 50 runs from just 26 balls, but he was trapped leg before wicket by a pinpoint yorker from Lizaad Williams, who finished with figures of three wickets for 54 runs. The dismissal left Australia requiring 44 runs from the final 14 overs, and the hosts closed out the game to bowl Australia out for 333 runs, sealing a 32-run win with one full over remaining. This victory marks the eighth ODI century of Miller’s international career, and secured the series win for South Africa with one match still to play. The three-match ODI series will conclude in Potchefstroom on Wednesday, before the two sides face off in a three-match Test series later in the tour.
