SAN SALVADOR, Argentina — Ahead of Australia’s opening rugby test match against the Los Pumas this Saturday, new Wallabies head coach Les Kiss has made a surprising but strategic call: omitting long-time starting skipper Harry Wilson from the match-day squad and handing the captain’s armband to prop Allan Ala’alatoa for the fixture.
Wilson first took over the captaincy under former Wallabies head coach Joe Schmidt, and he retained the leadership role through the start of Kiss’s tenure, leading the side in two recent test matches against Japan. Despite the change for this weekend’s clash, Kiss has emphasized that Wilson still retains his full confidence, and the exclusion is purely a planned rest to manage the backrower’s workload.
Australia is set to face Argentina across back-to-back test matches over the next two weekends, with the second fixture scheduled to take place in Mendoza. In Wilson’s absence, Rob Valetini will step into the backrow position alongside Fraser McReight and Tom Hooper, while Charlie Cale has earned a spot on the replacements bench. Carlo Tizzano, by contrast, has been left out of the 23-player match-day squad entirely.
Speaking to reporters after confirming his team selection, Kiss reaffirmed his faith in Wilson as the team’s top leadership option. “Harry’s the man — he remains my preferred captain,” Kiss stated.
The coach went on to praise the core leadership traits Wilson has brought to the Wallabies throughout his captaincy, highlighting his emotional investment in the side, sharp on-field rugby IQ, strong work ethic, and widespread respect among the playing group. “The responsibility of that is massive, but I don’t want it to be a weight,” Kiss explained, noting that the congested international test calendar leaves Wilson fully deserving of a scheduled break to refresh ahead of upcoming fixtures.
