A chilling homicide case has sent shockwaves across Thailand, after authorities discovered the body of a 17-year-old Thai national stuffed inside an abandoned suitcase, and arrested an Australian man who was attempting to flee the country just hours after the victim was reported missing.
Local law enforcement in the popular coastal resort city of Pattaya confirmed the details of the fast-moving investigation, which unfolded over less than 12 hours on Friday and Saturday. The victim, identified by local media as 17-year-old Tunchanok Donhomla, was first registered as a missing person at 5 p.m. local time on Friday, according to official police records.
Investigators immediately began reviewing closed-circuit security camera footage from the area, and the footage revealed a key sequence of events linking the suspect, identified as Simon Peter Carman, to the disappearance. According to police statements, the footage captured Carman entering a local condominium alongside Tunchanok, before exiting the building alone roughly an hour later. When he left, officers confirmed, Carman was dragging a large hard-shell suitcase behind him. He then loaded the suitcase onto the back of a motorbike and drove in the direction of a nearby unused railway line, where the bag was ultimately abandoned.
Acting on the intelligence gathered from the CCTV footage, Thai police tracked Carman to Suvarnabhumi International Airport, located roughly 150 kilometers north of Pattaya in Thailand’s capital Bangkok. Officers took him into custody at 1:15 a.m. on Saturday, just as he was preparing to board an international flight and leave the country. A quarter of an hour after the arrest, law enforcement teams searching the railway corridor found Tunchanok’s naked body inside the abandoned suitcase Carman had left behind.
Carman has been formally charged with a number of offenses, including primary murder, alongside additional charges of hiding and transporting a corpse, and sexual offenses against a minor. The Australian suspect has denied all charges against him, and has claimed that the killing was an act of self-defense.
In an unusual recorded message released from custody, Carman addressed Tunchanok’s family, saying, “I feel bad for what happened to your daughter. It was out of my control. I know you’ll be very sad, upset… same [as] me.” He also added a warning to other women and girls, urging them to “just be careful.”
The victim’s family has spoken out publicly about the tragedy. Tunchanok’s father told reporters he is “deeply saddened” by the violent and unexpected death of his teenage daughter, while her step-mother called for full accountability, saying, “I just want him to face the full consequences” for the killing. Representatives from the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade have confirmed they are providing consular assistance to Carman, in line with standard protocol for Australian citizens arrested overseas.
