Visionary director Christopher Nolan returns to the cinematic landscape with his highly anticipated epic ‘The Odyssey,’ releasing its inaugural trailer to global audiences. The film reimagines Homer’s ancient Greek masterpiece, tracing the arduous journey of warrior Odysseus (portrayed by Matt Damon) as he navigates treacherous waters and mythical challenges to return home following the Trojan War.
Universal Pictures unveiled the first visual teaser in February 2025, showcasing Damon in period-accurate costume. The project assembles an extraordinary ensemble cast including Anne Hathaway as Penelope (Odysseus’ devoted wife), Tom Holland as Telemachus (their son), alongside Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, Mia Goth, Benny Safdie, Jon Bernthal, and John Leguizamo.
Nolan serves as both writer and director while co-producing with his wife and longtime collaborator Emma Thomas. The trailer reveals breathtaking sequences of naval disasters, the iconic Trojan horse infiltration previously teased in exclusive IMAX previews, and perilous encounters with mythological creatures—including a shadow-dwelling beast of monumental proportions.
Employing groundbreaking IMAX film technology developed specifically for this production, ‘The Odyssey’ was shot across multiple international locations. Universal executive Jim Orr previously heralded the project at CinemaCon as “a visionary, once-in-a-generation cinematic masterpiece that Homer himself would quite likely be proud of.”
Leguizamo recently praised Nolan’s directorial approach on MSNBC’s ‘Morning Joe,’ noting his independence from studio interference and commitment to artistic vision. This marks Nolan’s first major project since the critically acclaimed ‘Oppenheimer,’ which secured seven Academy Awards in 2024.
