Norway’s seafood industry achieved unprecedented export performance in 2025, reaching a historic milestone of 181.5 billion Norwegian kroner ($18.03 billion) despite challenging market conditions. The record-breaking figures represent a 4% year-on-year increase, with total export volume reaching 2.8 million tonnes, according to official data from the Norwegian Seafood Council.
The Asian market, particularly China, demonstrated remarkable growth momentum, propelling the Nordic nation’s seafood exports to new heights. China solidified its position among Norway’s top three seafood export destinations, with shipments surging to 178,246 tonnes valued at approximately 12.3 billion NOK. This remarkable performance translated to a 30.9% year-on-year increase in export value, adding 2.9 billion NOK to Norway’s seafood revenue.
Salmon exports to China experienced particularly explosive growth, nearly doubling to 90,906 tonnes with export value skyrocketing 59% to 8.109 billion NOK. Equally impressive was Norway’s coldwater prawn performance in the Chinese market, where volumes soared by an extraordinary 244% to 8,392 tonnes, establishing China as Norway’s largest export market for this premium product.
Christian Chramer, CEO of the Norwegian Seafood Council, characterized 2025 as “a demanding year for seafood,” noting that reduced quotas and record prices for wild-caught species were offset by substantial volume growth in farmed salmon production. The industry successfully navigated these challenges through strategic market diversification and premium product positioning.
Sigmund Bjørgo, China Director of the Norwegian Seafood Council, expressed satisfaction with the sector’s performance, stating: “Looking back on the past year, we are pleased to see Norwegian seafood continuing to earn the trust of the Chinese market, achieving another record-high overall performance.” He emphasized China’s enduring status as “one of the most important export markets for Norwegian seafood” and committed to increased investment and closer industry collaboration to bring broader high-quality seafood offerings to Chinese consumers.
The exceptional growth in the Chinese market reflects evolving consumer preferences toward premium protein sources and Norway’s successful branding as a provider of sustainable, high-quality seafood products. This strategic market development positions Norway favorably within China’s increasingly sophisticated food import landscape.
