China state broadcaster pulls Real Madrid match over Mbappé joke

A high-profile broadcast blackout of Spain’s La Liga football matches in mainland China remains in effect with no clear end date announced, even after all three parties involved in a recent diplomatic and cultural controversy issued formal public apologies. The parent body of China’s state-run CCTV network, China Media Group (CMG), confirmed it had received and acknowledged the apologies from Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid star striker Kylian Mbappé, Real Madrid football club, and La Liga’s governing body, but has declined to share any details on when suspended broadcasts will resume. The incident first unfolded after Mbappé made remarks during an appearance on French talk show *The Bridge*, where he referenced a viral meme he found humorous that superimposed his face onto imagery described as depicting a “Chinese dictator” resembling revered late People’s Republic of China founder Mao Zedong. The comment immediately sparked widespread public backlash across Chinese social media platforms, prompting a swift formal rebuke from CMG, which initially issued a mandatory demand for public apologies from Mbappé, his club Real Madrid, and La Liga as a non-negotiable prerequisite for lifting the suspension of all Spanish top-flight football broadcasts. Multiple Chinese commercial partners also terminated their endorsement deals with the French global football star in the immediate aftermath of the comments. Mbappé issued his public apology within hours of the controversy breaking, stating: “My comment was ill-judged, and I now understand that it hurt many people in China and in Chinese communities around the world.” Shortly after, representatives from Real Madrid and La Liga also released formal statements of apology, while China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted publicly that it was treating Mbappé’s apology with full seriousness. Despite all parties meeting CMG’s initial stated conditions for resuming broadcasts, CCTV opted not to air Real Madrid’s Sunday La Liga fixture against Racing Santander, a match that ended in a 3-0 victory for Real Madrid with goals from Mbappé, Jude Bellingham, and Yan Diomande. This suspension of international sports broadcasts over perceived political sensitivities is far from unprecedented in China. Back in October 2019, the country pulled all National Basketball Association (NBA) broadcasts for a full 12 months after then-Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey published a tweet voicing support for pro-democracy demonstrators in Hong Kong. Morey later issued a clarifying statement noting he had taken time to listen to diverse perspectives following widespread criticism from Chinese fans, sponsors, and commercial partners, and emphasized he never intended to cause offense to Chinese audiences.
