Nearly 5 million passengers expected at DXB in peak season; Emirates issues travel advisory

As Dubai International Airport (DXB) braces for its busiest period of the year, Emirates has issued a comprehensive travel advisory to help passengers navigate the anticipated surge in travelers. With the peak tourist season coinciding with school holidays and numerous local events, the airline forecasts over 2.3 million departures and 2.5 million arrivals throughout December, totaling nearly 5 million passengers. To ensure a seamless travel experience, Emirates is urging travelers to plan ahead and utilize its array of services. Passengers are advised to arrive at the airport at least three hours before departure, clear immigration 90 minutes prior, and reach their boarding gate one hour in advance. The airline also emphasizes the importance of adhering to updated luggage regulations, including restrictions on power banks, smart bags, and e-cigarettes. Power banks under 100Wh must be carried in hand luggage, while smart bags require removable batteries and must remain powered off. To streamline the check-in process, Emirates encourages passengers to use its app or website 48 hours before departure. The app offers features such as digital boarding passes, biometric airport paths, meal selection, and in-flight entertainment planning. Additionally, travelers can bypass long queues by using Emirates City Check-In in DIFC or the 24-hour Ajman location, available from 24 hours up to 4 hours before departure. Passengers checking in at DIFC between December 15 and January 15 will earn 2,500 Emirates Skywards Miles each, with free parking and extended venue hours until midnight. For added convenience, passengers departing from Dubai can drop off luggage at the airport the night before their flight at no charge. Emirates also offers a ‘home check-in service’ in Dubai and Sharjah, where agents handle check-in and luggage collection directly from the traveler’s home, hotel, or office. This service, complimentary for First Class passengers and Platinum Skywards members, allows travelers to arrive at the airport later with only hand luggage. By leveraging these services, Emirates aims to mitigate the challenges of peak travel season and provide a smoother journey for its passengers.

GymNation unveils one-tonne billboard in Dubai, setting a global benchmark

Dubai, already renowned for its architectural marvels, has added another feather to its cap with the unveiling of the world’s heaviest permanent billboard by GymNation, the Middle East’s largest gym chain. Weighing an impressive one tonne, the billboard is constructed from forty interlocked weight plates, symbolizing the brand’s commitment to strength and accessibility. This groundbreaking installation not only sets a global benchmark but also marks the first time a UAE gym has created its own billboard. The project required a team of strong individuals to safely mount the structure, with health and safety measures including perimeter tape to prevent potential wall collapses. The billboard carries the bold message: ‘The Only Billboard That Needs A Spotter,’ aligning with GymNation’s launch of its new ‘Strongman’ class. Held every Saturday at 10am at the Mirdif branch, the class features power-based exercises inspired by the World’s Strongest Man competition. Rory McEntee, GymNation’s Chief Marketing Officer, described the project as a literal and figurative lift for advertising in the UAE, celebrating strength in all its forms. The class, developed in collaboration with expert fitness instructors, aims to bring out the inner strength in participants. Spectators are advised to stay outside the perimeter tape when viewing or photographing the billboard. The Strongman class can be booked online at GymNation.com.

  • Mali suspends French TV channels over alleged false reports

Mali suspends French TV channels over alleged false reports

In a significant move, Mali’s ruling military junta has suspended the operations of two prominent French television channels, TF1 and LCI, accusing them of disseminating unverified and false information regarding a fuel blockade imposed by the al-Qaida-linked militant group Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM). The decision was announced by Mali’s High Authority for Communication in a letter dated November 13, which was made public on Friday. The regulatory body cited a broadcast from November 9 as the basis for its action, disputing claims that the junta had banned fuel sales, that the regions of Kayes and Nioro were under complete blockade, and that terrorists were nearing the capital, Bamako. The letter stated that the channels’ services would be removed from distribution packages until further notice. Since September, JNIM has enforced a fuel blockade in Mali, exacerbating the country’s security and economic challenges. The resulting fuel shortages have led to long queues at gas stations and heightened instability. In response, several Western embassies, including those of the United States and France, have advised their citizens to leave the country. Mali, along with neighboring Niger and Burkina Faso, has been under military rule following coups in recent years, with leaders promising improved security. However, analysts note that the security situation in the Sahel region has deteriorated significantly, with record levels of attacks and civilian casualties attributed to both Islamic militants and government forces.

Dubai hosts high-stakes duel as Wilde and Waugh eye T100 glory ahead of Qatar finale

The 2025 T100 Triathlon World Tour reaches its penultimate stage in Dubai this weekend, with elite athletes Hayden Wilde and Kate Waugh aiming to solidify their championship leads ahead of the Qatar finale. The event, set against the backdrop of Dubai’s iconic landmarks, promises high-stakes competition and thrilling performances. Wilde, a dual Olympic medallist, enters the race with an unbroken streak of five victories this season. However, formidable challengers like Belgium’s Jelle Geens and Germany’s Mika Noodt stand ready to disrupt his quest for a sixth consecutive win. Wilde, who made a remarkable recovery from a severe bike crash earlier this year, remains focused on the tactical demands of the course, which winds through Jumeirah and Meydan. On the women’s side, Britain’s Kate Waugh seeks to extend her nine-point lead over compatriot Lucy Charles-Barclay, who is absent from this race. Waugh, who has consistently podiumed this season, faces fierce competition from athletes like Switzerland’s Julie Derron and USA’s Taylor Knibb. The Dubai T100 also marks a historic milestone for Ghani Souleymane, a Dubai-based endurance athlete attempting his 100th consecutive T100 distance triathlon, a feat expected to earn a Guinness World Record. The event, which includes amateur races and a festival atmosphere, showcases Dubai’s vibrant sports culture. With the Qatar finale looming, every point gained in Dubai could prove decisive in the championship standings.

  • Tanzania president promises probe into election protest deaths

Tanzania president promises probe into election protest deaths

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has initiated an official investigation into the widespread unrest that erupted during the recent election week, following allegations that her government violently suppressed historic protests. The announcement comes after she was re-elected with an overwhelming 98% of the vote, a result the opposition has labeled a ‘mockery of democracy.’ In a parliamentary address, President Samia urged prosecutors to exercise leniency towards those arrested during the violence, invoking a biblical reference: ‘Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.’ Her call for mercy aligns with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk’s, plea for a transparent investigation into reports of killings and human rights violations during and after the 29 October elections. The opposition claims hundreds may have died in the post-election chaos, though official figures remain undisclosed. The violence has shocked a nation long regarded as a bastion of stability and order. President Samia emphasized the need for political parties to engage in constructive dialogue and reaffirmed her commitment to a new constitution-making process. Analysts attribute the unrest to a tense political climate fueled by stalled reforms, youth discontent, internal power struggles within the ruling party, and the systematic exclusion of opposition leaders from the election. While President Samia’s initial leadership was praised for fostering openness, recent months have seen a surge in abductions, arrests, and killings of opposition members, casting doubt on her reform agenda.

  • Mass killings probe in Sudan will hold culprits to account, vows UN

Mass killings probe in Sudan will hold culprits to account, vows UN

The United Nations has announced an independent fact-finding mission to investigate reported mass killings in the Sudanese city of el-Fasher, marking a critical step in addressing what aid groups and the G7 have termed the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. UN human rights chief Volker Türk condemned the international community’s inaction, urging immediate action against the atrocities committed in Sudan’s devastating civil war. Over 150,000 people have been killed, and 12 million displaced, as the conflict continues to escalate. The Rapid Support Forces (RSF), accused of targeting non-Arab groups, captured el-Fasher last month after an 18-month siege. The city, once held by the Sudanese army, has become a focal point of the crisis. The UN mission will analyze digital evidence, including footage and photos of atrocities, to hold perpetrators accountable. Mona Rishmawi, a UN mission member, described the suffering in Darfur as surpassing the Janjaweed militia’s genocide two decades ago. The RSF, which traces its origins to the Janjaweed, is accused of devastating mass killings, rape, torture, and starvation tactics. The G7 recently condemned the violence, calling it the world’s largest humanitarian crisis. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio demanded international action to halt weapons supplies to the RSF, implicating the UAE in the conflict. The UAE denied supporting the RSF but expressed alarm over the attacks in el-Fasher. The RSF and Sudanese army have both rejected accusations of atrocities. Despite calls for a humanitarian truce, fighting continues unabated, with satellite imagery revealing piles of bodies and blood-stained earth in el-Fasher. Amnesty International has identified weapons from Serbia, Russia, China, Turkey, Yemen, and the UAE being used in Sudan, with smuggling routes often passing through the UAE. The UK has faced criticism for British-made weapons allegedly ending up in RSF hands. The UN arms embargo on Darfur, in place since 2004, has not been extended to the rest of Sudan, despite calls from human rights groups.

  • Central African Republic leader cleared for third term in key vote followed closely by Russia

Central African Republic leader cleared for third term in key vote followed closely by Russia

The Constitutional Court of the Central African Republic (CAR) has officially approved President Faustin Archange Touadera’s candidacy for the December 28 election, alongside opposition leader Anicet Georges Dologuélé and five other contenders. This decision comes as the nation grapples with a worsening security crisis and Touadera’s increasing reliance on Russian support for stability. Since assuming office in 2016 and securing reelection in 2021, Touadera has emerged as one of Russia’s strongest allies in Africa. The Russian mercenary group Wagner, which established its presence in CAR to combat rebel groups and restore peace, has played a pivotal role in safeguarding Touadera’s government. However, tensions have arisen over Russia’s push to replace Wagner with its state-run Africa Corps and demands for payment in cash rather than minerals. Wagner’s effectiveness in protecting Touadera and securing the capital in 2021 has made the government hesitant to comply with Moscow’s requests. The country has been embroiled in conflict since 2013, when Muslim rebels seized power, and a fragile 2019 peace deal remains incomplete. The court’s decision coincided with the UN Security Council extending its peacekeeping mission in CAR for another year, underscoring the ongoing challenges in the region.
