Man Charged in Cyclist Collision Appears in Court

The man accused of hitting national cyclist Jomari King with a vehicle has made his first court appearance.

Denroy Palmer appeared in court on Wednesday to answer to a charge of “coming into contact” relating to the incident, which occurred on 2 July in Collins. The case was adjourned until 8 September.

Eyewitnesses reported that the driver fled the scene after the collision. King did not suffer serious injuries.

The incident has revived calls from the cycling community for stronger road safety measures. In May 2022, fellow national cyclist Andre Simon was struck in a similar incident and later died from his injuries.
