In the early hours of Sunday local time, a devastating two-vehicle crash on the M9 Motorway in County Kildare, Republic of Ireland, has left multiple people dead and four others hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. The collision unfolded at approximately 3:00 a.m. near Junction 3 on the M9’s northbound carriageway, when one vehicle traveled the wrong direction along the road and collided head-on with a second passenger car.
Irish national police, known as Gardaí, confirmed the fatalities in an official statement released after the incident. The four injured victims, all occupants of the second vehicle, have been transported to separate regional medical facilities across the country. The driver and front-seat passenger, both women in their 30s, are currently being treated at Tallaght University Hospital, where both remain in critical condition. A female rear-seat passenger in her 20s was admitted to St. Luke’s General Hospital in serious condition, while the fourth injured person – a child – was transferred to Children’s Health Ireland at Crumlin, also listed in serious condition.
In the wake of the crash, authorities have closed a stretch of the M9 spanning both northbound and southbound lanes between Junction 3 and Junction 4, with signed local diversions put in place to redirect motorists. Contradicting early unconfirmed reports, state broadcaster RTÉ has confirmed that Gardaí were not engaged in a pursuit of the wrong-way vehicle at the time of the collision.
Per standard protocol for incidents involving fatalities or severe harm linked to police interaction, the Office of the Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland, Fiosrú, has been notified of the crash. An on-call team of independent investigators from the watchdog traveled to the crash site immediately to launch a probe. Fiosrú officials clarified that a mandatory referral for investigation does not imply any allegation of misconduct on behalf of Gardaí. Instead, the independent review is required to determine whether any action or inaction by police contributed to the deaths or serious injuries suffered in the incident.
Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly issued a stark condemnation of the reckless driving that led to the tragedy, labeling the crash a “horrific incident.” Kelly noted that all the injured victims were “innocently traveling” family members when they were struck by the wrong-way vehicle. He drew particular attention to a dangerous growing trend of reckless driving stunts performed for social media attention, saying: “What makes this reckless behaviour even more appalling is that in some cases it is being done for social media likes regardless of the potentially devastating impact it might have on innocent people and themselves.”
Kelly added that Gardaí officers face uniquely challenging positions when responding to these incidents, as they work to stop dangerous drivers while prioritizing the safety of other innocent road users. “Gardaí are put in a really challenging situation dealing with such incidents,” he said.
Local political leaders have also reacted to the tragedy, expressing profound sorrow for the lives lost and those affected. Shónagh Ní Raghallaigh, Sinn Féin TD for Kildare South, described the crash scene as “absolutely catastrophic.” “My deepest sympathies go out to the families of those who have lost their lives, and for those who remain in a critical condition in hospital,” she said. “My heart also goes out to the first responders and all of those working in our emergency services who were met with the most horrific of scenes this morning. This loss of life is colossal and the effect those losses will have on their friends and families is incalculable.”
Investigating officers are now asking for the public’s assistance to build a complete picture of the incident. Gardaí are appealing to any witnesses who saw the collision to contact investigators immediately. They are also requesting any motorists who were traveling on either the northbound or southbound M9 between 2:00 a.m. and 3:00 a.m. on Sunday, and who have dashcam footage of the crash or the surrounding area in that time frame, to share the recording with authorities.
