  • Sentencing of Raffique Skerritt Delayed After Fraud Conviction

Sentencing of Raffique Skerritt Delayed After Fraud Conviction

The sentencing of Raffique Skerritt has been postponed to September 26, following his conviction for obtaining money by false pretences in a case involving a $300,000 fraud.

Skerritt was found guilty by Justice Ann Marie Smith of defrauding a Syrian national in a scheme that unfolded between June and July 2019. Prosecutors said Skerritt falsely claimed he was owed funds by the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CHAPA) and persuaded the victim to lend him $300,000, promising repayment with interest along with a house and land.

The case traces back to a 2018 proposal by Skerritt to CHAPA in which he claimed his company could undertake a multi-million-dollar housing development. However, trial evidence showed the company never existed.

Despite receiving EC$1.59 million from CHAPA for a scaled-down version of the project, Skerritt failed to deliver the contracted homes. Site inspections later revealed the construction was substandard and incomplete.

The court will reconvene in September for sentencing.
